At Key Stage 3 students will receive Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) as part of their PSHCE curriculum which has a focus on people, work and money skills.
We also provide each year group with the opportunity to experience talks, receive advice and participate in workshops with external providers such as businesses and influential individuals who have varying degrees of expertise in different industries who work with the students to raise aspirations.
In Year 9 there is a bespoke options program which all students receive to assist them in making the right choices in selecting their chosen subjects for their GCSE’s. Alongside this is a parental open evening where parents will be able to discuss their child’s subject choices with the appropriate members of staff to ensure that it is the correct option that suits their child needs.
Students are also given an options booklet and relevant careers information which is provided by external providers to take into account when making their option choices.
Individual subject areas which are not necessarily delivered within the key stage 3 curriculum present an overview of their subject to students via a series of assemblies which allow for more informed decisions to made.
At Key Stage 4 the Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance is maintained via PSHCE lessons and the focus moves to help students to prepare for their WE placement and UCAS progress applications for post 16 options.
In order to ensure your child is provided with the most accurate and informative information, we arrange for a variety of post 16 provision to be made available throughout the year, including colleges and apprenticeship providers via Open days, talks, PSHCE lessons and form periods. We also run a mock interview scheme whereby students are required to attend an interview in a potential career area of choice, where they will receive feedback about their interview performance so as to build on their confidence and apply their interpersonal skills when attending interviews for colleges, apprenticeships and jobs.

We offer one to one career interviews for all of our students via our highly experienced and skilled Connexions Careers Advisor who will work with students to discuss their interests and career ambitions, advising which route will best meet their differing needs. At Rivington and Blackrod High School we embrace the opportunity to deliver enterprise activities as an additional component within our whole school curriculum. The enterprise activities allow students to enhance and embed skills such as team work, problem solving, creativity, resilience and initiative. These skills are highly desirable within the work place and are what employers look for in their future potential employees.
We also deliver explicit enterprise days to students across all year groups throughout the year. These are supported in some instances by external individuals, businesses or agencies and allow students the opportunity to take part in a range of dynamic entrepreneurial activities outside of the classroom which are inspirational and drive students to develop alternative ideas and skills.
At Rivington and Blackrod High School we have in place a comprehensive work experience programme for Year 10 students. This enables them to spend five working days within a real working environment. Many local companies have been involved in the programme and offer excellent placement opportunities for our students. Through work experience we aim to give students an insight and an appreciation of the world of work, and assist in helping to manage more effectively the transition from school to employment. Students are encouraged to find their own work placements as it is a way of building communication and encouraging students to take initiative.
