Welcome to our Sixth Form

I am delighted to welcome you to Rivington and Blackrod Sixth Form.  The quality of learning experience we provide in Years 12 and 13 is exceptional, a fact borne out by the results and the views of parents and students alike. The mix of highly effective teaching and learning coupled with individual guidance and support makes our sixth form a very special place.

Rivington and Blackrod High School Sixth Form is a well established school sixth form of around 320 students, situated in Horwich. The majority of our students go onto to university, having studied AS / A levels or BTECs chosen from a range of thirty six ‘level 3’ courses – including all of the usual choices but also some of the less traditional options such as BTEC Travel and Tourism and A level Product Design.

Rivington and Blackrod High School was founded in the sixteenth century and we are both proud of our history and traditions and keen to develop as a forward looking sixth form.  We believe that the very positive affirming relationship which exists between the students, staff, parents and community, is central to the ethos of our school.

Rivington has a solid record of academic success. Our A Level and BTEC students achieve grades above the national norm, the result of their commitment and hard work; the support they receive from home and the expertise, dedication and inspiration of Rivington staff who nurture each student so that he/she can fulfil his/her academic and personal potential.

There are a wide range of enrichment activities on offer. These change from year to year, and in the academic year 2010/11 included:

  • visits to a wide range of universities, including Manchester and Cambridge
  • visit to New York and an exchange visit with families in Ann Arbour, Michigan
  • football and netball in the Wednesday afternoon North West England Colleges League
  • drama and music productions
  • placements in local primary schools and care homes
  • Lancashire wildlife trust programmes in local woods
  • leadership, mentoring and coaching opportunities
  • badminton, athletics, tennis and a range of other sporting opportunities each Wednesday
  • direct entry Gold Duke of Edinburgh
  • an extra curricular citizenship and human rights course leading to a four night visit to Krakow and Auschwitz
  • a trip to Parliament.

Our recently refurbished Sixth Form Centre is open to all students, not only from the School itself, but also from schools across Bolton and especially from neighbouring schools. Our reputation for high academic standards and excellent support make us a popular choice for students seeking good quality teaching in small groups. We offer a high level of support for all students with a personal tutor and excellent facilities for independent study along with a very wide range of enrichment activities.

Rivington  is, above all, a happy and inclusive sixth form, a place where students work hard and where they also find friendship, enrichment and support.  We are confident that each student who comes to us will be well prepared for the exciting challenges of the 21st Century.

Furthermore, in partnership with other schools, colleges and training providers in Bolton West we are also able to offer a wide range of vocational qualifications.
