GCSE & A-Level Information
Year 7
Year 7 is grouped into four blocks with a similar distribution of ability and within this each block has three sets for Mathematics. The three groups in each block are set with consideration to prior attainment in the first instance, thereafter movement between sets is effected when it is seen and justified as necessary by the class teacher. Movement between sets can happen at any time as long as it is in the best interest of the pupil and the group they are moving into.
Year 7 have regular assessment and as an end of year assessment sit a past SAT's style paper commensurate with the ability and targets of the group. Pupils that are working toward level 4 also take the Progress Tests.
Year 8
Year 8 is grouped into two blocks with a similar distribution of ability and within this each block has six sets for Mathematics. The six groups in each block are set with consideration to prior attainment and teacher comment in the first instance, thereafter movement between sets is effected when it is seen and justified as necessary by the class teacher. Movement between sets can happen at any time as long as it is in the best interest of the pupil and the group they are moving into.
Year 8 have regular assessment and as an end of year assessment sit a past SAT’s paper commensurate with the ability and targets of the group.
Year 9

Year 9 have regular half term assessment and formal assessment is undertaken twice during the year under exam conditions, the first in the classroom and the end of year SAT's level assessment in examination conditions.
Year 10
Year 10 is grouped into two blocks with a similar distribution of ability and within this each block has six sets for Mathematics. There are also groups of foundation curriculum pupils that do not fall within the setting structure of the department. All pupils at Rivington and Blackrod High School work towards taking a GCSE in Mathematics at a level that reflects:
Set 1a Modular Higher Tier with two modules completed in Year 10 and the terminal module during the May/June GCSE exam period in year 11.
Set 1b Modular Higher Tier with two modules completed in Year 10 and the terminal module during the May/June GCSE exam period in Year 11.
Set 1c Modular Higher Tier with two modules completed in Year 10 and the terminal module during the May/June GCSE exam period in Year 11
Set 2a Modular Foundation Tier with two modules completed in Year 10 and the terminal module during the May/June GCSE exam period in Year 11
Set 2b Modular Foundation Tier with two modules completed in Year 10 and the terminal module during the May/June GCSE exam period in Year 11
Set 2c Modular Foundation Tier with two modules completed in Year 10 and the terminal module during the May/June GCSE exam period in Year 11
Year 11
Year 11 is grouped into two blocks with a similar distribution of ability and within this each block has six sets for Mathematics. There are also groups of foundation curriculum pupils that do not fall within the setting structure of the department. Set 2b Modular Foundation Tier with two modules completed in and the terminal module during the May/June GCSE exam period in Year 11
Set 2c Modular Foundation Tier with two modules completed in and the terminal module during the May/June GCSE exam period in Year 11
Foundation Curriculum Modular Foundation Tier with two modules completed in Year 10 and the terminal module during the May/June GCSE exam period in Year 11.
All G.C.S.E Examinations are examined by the AQA Exam Board.
All AS and A2 examinations are examined by the Edexcel Exam Board.
Year 12
Learning opportunities occur in two ways - pupils can:
- Re-sit G.C.S.E Maths at the appropriate level.
- Take AS Maths /Use of Maths in one year
Year 13
Learning opportunities occur in three ways - pupils can:
- Re-sit G.C.S.E Maths at the appropriate level.
- Take A2 Maths/Use of Maths in one year
