Trips Out

The English department organise a variety of trips throughout the year.  Across all the Key Stages we will be visiting the theatre to watch performances which we will enhance pupils’ understanding of Literature.  Many of the visits have inspired pupils’ love of the theatre and they have continued to enjoy visits with friends and family to venues such as the Octagon in Bolton and the Royal Exchange in Manchester.

In Year 8 our Gifted and Talented in English students have the opportunity to visit Dove Cottage in the Lake District, home of William Wordsworth, and undertake a series of workshops which help pupils to appreciate the influence the environment plays in the creative process.

In Year 9 and 12, this appreciation is further enhanced by a visit to Howarth, in West Yorkshire, home of the Bronte sisters.  Here the students visit the Parsonage Museum, where they learn about the lives of these three famous writers and the influences upon their works.

Year 10 pupils have formed links with Manchester Metropolitan University’s Creative Writing Department, and have worked alongside professional writers and university tutors to develop their writing techniques and understand the creative process in more detail.
