Key Stage 3 |

| Level 4 | Perform a song or piece following simple notation. Create and combine own musical ideas as part of a group composition and be able to listen and assess own creative work. |
| Level 5 | Perform both solo and supporting parts, in time, and understand the difference between the two. Combine musical devices such as melody, rhythm, chords and structure in compositions and improve and refine work |
| Level 6 | Select and make expressive use of tempo, dynamics, phrasing in musical performances and compositions. Be able to improve work in a way that is appropriate to the given style of the music. |
GCSE |

| A | The performance is accurate and fluent. Any slips are inconsequential. The performance is convincing and stylish with a secure sense of style with detail to articulation, phrasing and dynamic contrast. |
| C | The performance is broadly accurate and fluent although errors may interrupt the flow. The performance is generally successful with an awareness of style which is shown is some expressive passages. |
| E | Accuracy and fluency are only occasionally evident. The performance demonstrates no conscious sense of style displaying little understanding of how to shape the music. |
A-Level |

| A | The performance will be of a grade 5 or above standard. There will be no discernible flaws and the performer will have observed the composers expressive and performance directions. |
| C | The performer will be playing a piece equivalent to grade 4. The performance will achieve consistency in most elements but may lack variety, technical competence. |
| E | The Performer will play pieces that make few demands on them technically. The music may be scarcely recognisable. |
