Outdoor Education

We challenge the Individual

In Years 10, 11 and Sixth Form, many young people take part in the nationally acclaimed Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme which is aimed at developing the individual to levels of Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards.  Service, skills, physical recreation and expedition Sections teach students vital life skills and increase in difficulty as they progress towards the coveted Gold Award.  The range of Leadership Awards on offer give the students the chance to develop leadership skills through sport and dance and enhances their links with the community.

All pupils in Key Stage 3 have the opportunity to participate in outdoor and adventurous activities during lesson time and beyond with many studying for the John Muir Award.  Students in Key Stage 4 have the opportunity to be involved in an in-house Outdoor Education Diploma Course and can, in Year 10 and Year 11 study for BTEC qualifications.

We take students out of their ‘comfort zone’ and offer real challenge through a variety of different outdoor experiences.

We encourage an “I can” culture where students become more self assured and confident - built on praise and reward for any positive step no matter how small.

Developing the ‘soft skills’ (personal qualities) is considered just as important developing the ‘hard skills’ (different techniques), and with this in mind we provide amazing opportunities on a daily basis for personal development where students can develop outside the classroom and the school grounds in a stimulating and challenging environment.  Outdoor Education is one of the highlights of the curriculum at Rivington and Blackrod High School, offering opportunities on a daily basis that can only be dreamt of in most state schools, made possible only through the imagination and drive of staff, senior management team and governors.
