Modern Foreign Languages

We believe that modern languages are lifelong practical skills. Therefore, we have a variety of extra curricular activities in place, to stimulate our learners and guide them onto the path of linguistic excellence.

Despite the decreasing trend nationally in the study of MFL, Rivington and Blackrod High School’s MFL Department continues to attract good numbers at GCSE. Results continue to improve and exceed the national average in French.

In 2009, in German 68% of Rivington students gained A*-C grades and 91% in French.  In French and German the A-Level pass rate was 100% above the National average.

We continue to attract highly motivated and talented students at A/S and A2. In addition to their time-tabled lessons, students have a weekly session with the languages assistant.

As part of their enrichment, they have the opportunity to help in our Feeder Primary Schools where they have a positive and motivating impact on learners. By going to Languages Seminars in Bolton, Edge Hill University and Manchester, we throw light on the careers in MFL and open the door to the learning of languages. The motto of the day is ‘English is not enough!’

The trips to a German Christmas market and to France in the Summer term enable students to experience the real Germany and France; such schemes are real life experiences.
