Course Outline

GCSE Spanish is topical and relevant, comprising the following themes and sub-themes:

  • Identity and culture: Me, my family and friends; Relationships with family and friends; Marriage/partnership; Technology in everyday life; Social media; Mobile technology; Free-time activities; Music; Cinema and TV; Food and eating out; Sport; Customs and festivals in French-speaking countries/ communities.
  • Local, national, international and global areas of interest: Home, town, neighbourhood and region; Social issues; Charity/ voluntary work; Healthy/unhealthy living; Global issues; The environment; Poverty/homelessness; Travel and tourism.
  • Current and future study and employment: My studies; Life at school/college; Education post-16; Career choices and ambitions.

What will I study?

Each of the sub-themes will focus on the four key skill areas of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. Students will learn how to manipulate the target language through a wide range of activities, such as role play, translation, and authentic materials analysis. Our online interactive resources accessible from home support students in the learning of vocabulary and grammar and allow students to consolidate their learning and improve overall communication in the target language.

How will I be assessed?

The GCSE exam is linear: each of the four key skills (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking) will be assessed at the end of the two-year course, each unit accounting for 25% of the overall award.

Students will either be entered for the Foundation Tier (Grades 1-5) or the Higher Tier (Grades 4-9), and students must take all four questions papers at the same tier.

What could I do afterwards?

Knowing Spanish improves business relations, strengthens negotiations and is key to effective communication with businesses in other countries and success; it can increase job opportunities and earning potential.

Spanish provides a solid foundation for further study at A-level and enhances your CV and employability in our rapidly changing Global Market. Languages are considered an asset across most industries - When you have a language, the possibilities are endless!
