Subject Overview

Science underpins everything we do in our modern society, and is a key part of building a successful future for generations to come. It provides the foundation for understanding the world around us. During their time at RBHS, students will explore science through the specific disciplines of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. The aim of our curriculum is to provoke student curiosity, provide conceptual and contextual understanding of life around them, and to leave students feeling inspired.

Students develop a wide range of analytical, evaluative, mathematical and practical skills across all three key stages. Students will become more confident in recalling and applying knowledge from all areas of the curriculum. The curriculum we offer gradually increases in difficulty as students progress through year groups and key stages.

Our curriculum helps students develop the essential skills needed to pursue a career in science, whilst furthering their subject specific knowledge across all three disciplines. By offering a curriculum that helps students improve their communication and organisational skills, our students will be more prepared for a career in any subject area.

Key Stage 3 Overview:

We follow the National Curriculum for Science at Key Stage 3.

Students study all three Science subject areas: Biology, Chemistry and Physics. The Key Stage 3 curriculum runs from Year 7 to Year 9 and covers all aspects of the National Curriculum. Year 7 students will follow the Ark Curriculum. Students will study many topics such as Atoms & Matter, Chemical Reactions, Forces, Space, Health & Nutrition, and Ecology.

 Key Stage 4 Overview

In Key Stage 4, we build on the core ideas of Key Stage 3. We follow the AQA GCSE Science Curriculum at Key Stage 4, which covers the National Curriculum for Science at Key Stage 4. Students studying Key Stage 4 Science will either complete the Combined Science: Trilogy course (Foundation or Higher tier), earning 2 GCSEs, or the Separate Science course (Biology, Chemistry and Physics), earning 3 GCSEs. The AQA GCSE Curriculum is studied in Years 10 and 11.

Key Stage 5 Overview:

We offer a range of Key Stage 5 Subjects - AQA A-Level Biology, AQA A-Level Chemistry, AQA A-Level Physics, and Pearson BTEC Applied Science. Year 13 Biology students follow the OCR A A-Level Biology specification. All of our Key Stage 5 curriculums develop essential knowledge and understanding of different areas of the subject and how they relate to each other. They also ensure that students develop and demonstrate a deep appreciation of the skills, knowledge and understanding of scientific methods.
