Year 9 students take part in The Brilliant Club Scholars Programme

Friday, 18th March 2022

Over the last two terms, 20 Year 9 students have participated in The Brilliant Club Scholars Programme, which aims to encourage students to think about the possibility of university and what those studies would look like.

As part of the program, the group were paired with real-life university students, one of which is currently working on achieving their PhD, which means that they can become a Doctor in their chosen field (not the medical kind, though!).

They were also paired with a tutor who works on studying all about the placenta. The group were posed with the question: ‘Is the placenta the most important organ?’. Over the course of two months, the students participated in several tutorials where they learnt all about the function (role) and structure of the placenta and delved into the possible complications and issues of the organ. They were then challenged to write an essay that answered the project question and were graded using university-level criteria.

All students were true assets to Rivington and Blackrod High School and obtained the University grade of a First in their final assignment. The PhD tutor said, “The group were fantastically hard-working, and all showed tremendous commitment, time management and independence in completing high quality university standard work”.

A huge well done to all involved in The Brilliant Club Scholars Programme.

What does The Scholars Programme offer?

  • Challenging courses on subjects beyond the curriculum, taught by a world class researcher
