Welcome to Rivington & Blackrod Sixth Form

About Rivington & Blackrod Sixth Form

Rivington and Blackrod Sixth Form is a well-established Sixth Form with around two hundred students. After completing their A Level, BTEC or T Level studies, most of our students go to university.

We have a justified reputation for the strength of our results and place a high level of importance on providing a very high standard of pastoral care, student support and guidance. Our reputation for high academic achievement and excellent individualised support makes us a popular choice for students seeking good quality teaching in small groups. We welcome students from all schools across Bolton as well as students from Rivington & Blackrod High School.

We are delighted to invite you to our Sixth Form Open Evening on Thursday, 27th February 2025 from 5.30pm until 7.30pm.

The evening provides an opportunity for you to:

  • Explore our fantastic new facilities
  • Meet our subject teachers and some of our students

Refreshments will be available throughout the evening and our students, the biggest advocates of our Sixth Form, will be providing guided tours around our newly refurbished facilities where you’ll have the chance to find out more about some of our subjects and discover how we deliver the Rivi Experience.

A message from Mrs J Stephens, Director of Sixth Form

Moving on to Sixth Form studies presents you with new opportunities and challenges, whether progressing from Year 11 at Rivington or joining us from another school. Whatever your background, you will aim to build on your achievements to date, explore the many opportunities open to you, and plan for your future. We aim to support and encourage you as much as possible to help you achieve your goals and realise your full potential.

A strong work ethic

There is a strong work ethic in our Sixth Form, where we have high expectations of all our students, and we are very proud of the achievements of all our students. The two years spent in Sixth Form mark the transition between school and going to university, starting an apprenticeship, taking a gap year or entering employment. We aim to thoroughly support you in all the decisions you will make with our experienced Sixth Form team.

A broad and enriching curriculum

The Sixth Form at Rivington offers you a broad and enriching curriculum. As well as exploring new areas of knowledge, perhaps in new subjects, you will find opportunities for wider interaction with others, leadership and involvement in the community, and different experiences in sport, art, design, drama and music.

We attach great importance to the skills and personal qualities you gain through work and other activities in and out of school. There are opportunities to work in teams, help others and take on roles of Sixth Form responsibility. You will take part in visits both as a year group and through academic departments; you will have access to facilities that include art studios, design and technology workshops, laboratories, drama, music, sport and ICT. Taking advantage of these opportunities will help you to achieve high standards in all you do and to make the most of the Sixth Form.

Operating on a four day taught week

We operate on a four day taught week with one other day available for additional study, work experience and enrichment. A high level of support is offered to all students with a personal tutor and excellent recently refurbished facilities for individual study, along with a wide range of enrichment activities.

An inclusive and supportive community

The Sixth Form community aims to be inclusive and supportive of everyone. Life-long friendships are made here and sustained in years to come. It is an exciting time, and the decisions, plans and ideas you make now will forge the future ahead. Over the two years, you will explore your aspirations and develop your thinking and life skills so that you leave us as an independent young person equipped to thrive and lead in our ever changing world.

A chance to develop leadership skills and take part in a range of charitable, cultural and social events

There are structured opportunities to develop leadership skills and a wide range of charitable, cultural and social events. The Sixth Form arranges several residential trips, including visits to Parliament, the CERN project in Geneva, New York, and Auschwitz. Enrichment activities include additional support for those applying to the most competitive university courses, including Oxford or Cambridge, and for courses such as Medicine and Law.

We also offer work experience placements which are vital for successful applications in many areas, such as healthcare and education. Students also have the opportunity for direct entry to the superb Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme.
