Course Outline

This Drama course will provide a practical and theoretical understanding of the Performing Arts Industry. In a practical environment, you will develop acting and performance skills to enable you to work as part of a production team. You will have the opportunity to experience and become a part of live theatre. This course also offers technical role opportunities, including lighting, costume, set and sound as well as opportunities to perform within your class, school and community and visits to the theatre to watch a live performance.

What will I study?

Component 1: Exploring the Performing Arts - This unit will allow you to understand the processes, responsibilities and skills involved in creating live theatre. You will practically explore three theatre styles, focusing specifically on a live performance for each and analyse the plays practically using the skills and techniques developed in the workshops for each theatre style. You will have the opportunity to watch live theatre and gain an understanding of the performing arts industry from various roles, including director, actor and technical assistants.

Component 2: Developing Skills and Techniques in the Performing Arts - This unit develops your understanding and effectiveness of preparing for, taking part in and evaluating a performance, taking into consideration the audience’s needs.

It will develop the skills and techniques needed to perform on stage as an actor or in a technical role. You will take part in practical workshops to develop such skills and apply these to an extract from an existing play. Throughout the process, you will complete a logbook and be recorded in a final performance of your extract.

Component 3: Responding to a brief (External) - This unit develops your understanding of the practical and organisational processes surrounding a performance’s successful staging in your chosen space including the cooperative nature of a production team and enables you to get involved in making Drama! How will I be assessed?

  • Component 1: Exploring the Performing Arts (Internal) 30% of the qualification
  • Component 2: Developing Skills and Techniques in the Performing Arts (Internal) 30% of the qualification
  • Component 3: Responding to a brief (External) 40% of the qualification

What could I do afterwards?

Both Drama and Level 2 Performing Arts would set an excellent foundation for further study on our Post-16 courses, BTEC Performing Arts Level 3 or A-level Drama and Theatre Studies.
