Former Rivington and Blackrod Pupils Cycle the Western Front Way

Thursday, 15th May 2025

This June, a group of former Rivington and Blackrod pupils — Colin, Kevin, Rob and Russ — will undertake an incredible challenge: cycling the Western Front Way from the Swiss border to Nieuwpoort on the Belgian coast.

The route, which follows what was once “no man’s land” during WWI, spans a remarkable 1,020km (634 miles). Along the way, they’ll be visiting the graves of former Rivington and Blackrod students who made the ultimate sacrifice during the First World War and are buried along the route — paying tribute to their bravery and remembering the school’s connection to this significant part of history.

Victoria Walmsley, Head of Rivington and Blackrod High School, commented:

“I am proud to support this phenomenal cycle challenge, which demonstrates the ambition, courage, and resilience of these ex-Rivington pupils, while also remembering the bravery and commitment of the fallen WW1 heroes who were educated at our school. This reinforces the values and aspirations that we continue to uphold at the school today.

The selfless efforts of these ex-pupils in supporting several worthy charities, as well as the school, and making a difference in the local community, are just another example of the aspiration we continue to nurture in our pupils today. It’s a testament to the long-held traditions and values of Rivington and Blackrod School, which have been upheld for more than a hundred years.
