Course Outline

This course will enable students to have a thorough understanding of how children learn and develop over the first five years of their lives. It will provide students with the knowledge and understanding of child development and wellbeing necessary for working with children in a variety of settings.

What will I study?

This is an exciting course, which looks at all aspects of child development from conception to the time a child reaches five years of age. This involves the study of topics such as; planning a family, pregnancy, birth, post-natal care, physical and intellectual development, play, and other aspects of family life. You will get the opportunity to look at how we can support children to give them the best start in life.

How will I be assessed?

There will be two assessments;

  • 1 non-exam assessment worth 50% - externally set and internally marked
  • 1 exam worth 50% - externally set and externally marked

What could I do afterwards?

This course would be useful for anyone who wants to work with children in the future. It would also be beneficial for anyone who would like to work in a health and social care profession.

This course would help students obtain entry onto Level 3 qualifications at Rivington and Blackrod Sixth Form. These include Level 3 technical awards such as a BTEC National Diploma in Children’s Play, Learning and Development or Health and Social Care. It would also help students who would like to apply for apprenticeships in early years’ education, nursing/midwifery, or social work.
